What is the difference between psychiatry and therapy?

Psychiatry is a practice facilitated by a trained doctor, an MD or DO, dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental illnesses. Psychiatrists are trained to differentiate mental illnesses from other physical ailments that present psychiatric symptoms. The primary difference between therapy and psychiatry is that psychiatry employs medication along with other therapies to treat specific mental illnesses. Therapy, on the other hand, is an umbrella term for all types of treatments that deal with mental health. The most familiar form of therapy is CBT which involves working with a licensed mental health worker to understand how a patient thinks and interacts with the world around them. This is accomplished through counseling sessions and other techniques that promote personal understanding and awareness.
