As a psychotherapist, I don't feel that there is an "ideal" client. I have worked with many mental health issues such as depression, anxiety disorders including, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and others, and dysfunctional ways of dealing with major areas of life such as relationships, social life, work life, emotions and thinking. I've worked with adults, and the elderly in the psych setting; as well as families and children. The treatment modalities I use vary, but I look at how our early experiences have influenced our ways of thinking and feeling, decision making and behavior. As a patient becomes more aware of these dysfunctional aspects, they change them to more functional ones that have more satisfying outcomes in their lives.
I tend to allow the client to take control of the session, and address their concerns best to cater to their needs. When a therapist utilizes empathy in session they can essentially tailor a client's treatment to meet his or her specific needs, and allow the client to feel safe, validated and "heard." I'd validate emotions, and acknowledge the person's right to their feelings.
