Which is better, therapy or medication?
Both medication and therapy have been shown to be effective in treating mental illness. Medication is used primarily to counteract strong biological factors that play leading roles in schizophrenia, major depression and bipolar disorder. Therapy can also be effective in treating these severe conditions especially in conjunction with medication to give individuals the knowledge about his or her condition and how to handle it. Therapy on its own also provides a multitude of benefits to patients in terms of self awareness and long term mental and emotional growth.
What is the difference between psychiatry and therapy?
Psychiatry is a practice facilitated by a trained doctor, an MD or DO, dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental illnesses. Psychiatrists are trained to differentiate mental illnesses from other physical ailments that present psychiatric symptoms. The primary difference between therapy and psychiatry is that psychiatry employs medication along with other therapies to treat specific mental illnesses. Therapy, on the other hand, is an umbrella term for all types of treatments that deal with mental health. The most familiar form of therapy is CBT which involves working with a licensed mental health worker to understand how a patient thinks and interacts with the world around them. This is accomplished through counseling sessions and other techniques that promote personal understanding and awareness.

I’m not depressed, I’ve just been under a lot of stress these past few weeks. Do I need therapy?
Seeking therapy is completely up to the individual. It may strongly benefit someone to simply talk about their problems with a trained professional who will guide than through answering hard questions. Ultimately, the goal of therapy is to increase self-awareness and help patients work towards positive life changes.
