The resilience that I see in my clients is what keeps me working in the field of mental health. I’ve learned that people often times need someone to be a witness to what they’ve experienced. It can be hard to feel strong. It can also be exhausting. I find inspiration in helping someone access their own power, just like others have done in my life. I feel fulfilled by seeing a client’s journey, growing in their self-awareness, confidence, and connection.
I create a safe environment with compassion and lightheartedness. I take the client’s lead in determining goals for therapy while exploring what does not work for them. I am intentional about integrating mindfulness or somatic work in sessions to understand a client’s process better and to understand any avoidance that may be present. I also enjoy integrating expressive arts as needed to help clients process their experiences in a way that may be more accessible.
I build a strong therapeutic alliance by being strengths-based and helping clients gain insight into the knowledge they already possess. I also use a multicultural lens and decolonial approach to therapy. In our first session, I ask clients about their previous experiences with therapy, as the mental health system has perpetuated trauma in marginalized communities which has led to mistrust and the pathologizing of people’s experiences. I strive to minimize shame around therapy by being non-judgmental and allowing clients to define what our time together means for them. I meet clients where they are in their process, taking a harm reduction approach, and recognizing that unhealthy coping and behaviors come from a place of needing to survive intersecting systems that impact families. I work with clients on strengthening their support system because I believe that people heal in community.
