There are several reasons that inspire me to work in mental health. I am hoping that I will be able to reduce the level of stigma connected to mental health, to normalize conversations about mental health and reduce levels of shame and guilt that keep people from seeking help. I also feel a need for human connection offering them understand, compassion and guidance when they need it most.
Building trust and fostering meaningful relationships is fundamental forming a strong environment creating change. I am mindful of being an active listener, by being present with clients and maintaining eye contact, avoid interrupting, validating their emotions, being culturally and sensitive, and reflecting back so that both the client and therapist are on the same page.
Establishing trust and a strong therapeutic alliance with clients is the foundation to foster personal change and growth. Therapeutic relations is created by establishing safety and confidentiality, creating a being non judgmental space, and by being consistent and reliable (show up on time and follow up on agreed upon actions, fostering collaboration, and respecting self determination.
