My favorite part of being a therapist is witnessing my clients’ transformations. When coming to therapy, clients are often feeling down on themselves and stuck. My job is to help clients recognize and build on their strengths in order to meet their goals. This process can be very eye opening and empowering for clients, which then sets them up for future success in tackling life’s challenges on their own in the future.
I like to take a collaborative approach. Although I have education and training as a therapist, the client is the expert of their own life. Instead of simply telling the client what they should do to improve, first I want to learn about them as a person and their experiences. This allows me to avoid a “one size fits all” approach and instead collaborate with the client to form a treatment plan that makes sense to them.
Having a safe space during sessions is key to the client’s progress. I take a nonjudgmental approach by looking to understand the “why” behind clients’ actions in order to better understand the full picture of who they are. I recognize that the use of maladaptive coping skills doesn’t make someone “bad” as these coping mechanisms are typically developed when people feel like they have limited options and are just trying to stay afloat. It’s my job as a therapist to help the client discover new coping skills and learn how to use them.
